Laser eye surgery

LASER TREATMENTS have become integral to refractive eye surgery procedures although they were not used for ophthalmology initially. It is said that the first laser was developed at Bell Labs in 1958. The researchers were working on microwaves and wanted a way to see the molecules more clearly. The first working laser was demonstrated on 16 May 1960 by Theodore Maiman at Hughes Research Laboratories. It used a ruby crystal that generated a red light at 694 nanometers wavelength. Since then, lasers have become a multi-billion dollar industry.

Elections 2009: An analysis

THE CONGRESS party’s 201-seat tally is the best ever by any party since 1991, when it won 197 seats. The BJP's tally of 121 is the worst since 1991. The tally of the Left and its allies, 23, is the worst ever. Congress has staged a comeback in India's largest state, U.P, with nearly 22 seats (counting is still on there), after 25 years. And this election saw the final nail in the coffin of the regional and caste-based parties. The middle class is relieved that the regional parties' ambition of becoming the kingmaker and in course of time, forming an instable government has been thwarted. The people of India clearly ignored communalism, caste-ism, and jingoism and voted for stability.

Dealing with romantic relationships

SOME PEOPLE are secretive by nature and wait for the right time. Others may like to keep quiet because of family pressure. Similarly there can be several other reasons, but if you fail to convince your partner of the need to keep a lid on the affair, he/she may take it in a negative context. It’s great to have your partner around, almost eight hours a day. However, it would be better to keep your private life, private, at work.

Reena, a working woman, is going around with one of her colleagues. Though the relationship they share is beautiful, their co-workers make every possible effort to unnerve them. She reveals, “If he doesn’t come for a day, people ask me about his whereabouts. The moment we step out for a smoke, all heads turn towards us. Many times, I have overheard people gossiping about us. At times it irritates me so much that I find it difficult to concentrate on my work.”

The Jesus Brand

THE WORLD is of branding. No, it’s not marketing. Marketing has lost that ‘X-factor’. It’s branding now. Just have a fair glance at our local deities - Aamir Khan is brand perfectionist, Lalu is brand rural India, Shahrukh is brand metrosexual and the Stick Bebo is brand size zero. Everybody is feeding on their own brand, even living on it. Branding is the talk of the town. This trend has only created the demand of the mushrooming advertising agencies and brand promotion organisations.

English artisan Josian Wedgwood was the first to build the modern business brand. Wedgwood was able to develop demand for his tablewares and command premium price over comparable tableware and other products.

Three cheers for you, Ma!

MA, THAT was the first thing that came to my mind, as I sat there alone at the platform... dad had just left for my hometown... I was in a new place, a new city…A destination that I had chosen for myself… I thought about a hundred things… about my new hostel... about my internship that was going to begin the next day, and I found myself coming back to Ma…

Back at home, I had struggled with her, packing in thing for my stay. In the afternoon, I managed to have a siesta, while my Ma meticulously wrote out a list of things she had packed and what to find where. She had woken me up an hour and a half later, with cookies and a hot cup of tea and we sat down in our garden talking about how fast life moves on. We had then moved over to other things, jumping from topic to topic, talking about a hundred million things.

Celebrate Mother's Day with sincerity and gratitude

MOTHER’S DAY is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. This year it falls on May 8. According to Wikipedia, it is celebrated to honour all mothers and express gratitude for the hardships they bear in bringing up a child and their contribution to the humanity. Most countries including US, Australia, Canada and India celebrate it.

Generally, mother is a biological and/or social female parent of an offspring. And, a healthy connection between a mother and a child form a secure base, from which the child may later venture forth into the world, says Wkipedia.

Reviewing Obama's first 100 days

IF WE'VE learned anything from the 100 days since US President Barack Obama's inauguration, it's that the man cannot walk on water. He is not divine.

In the wake of a Messianic campaign and historic Election Day victory, Obama faced enormous expectations when he took office January 20, as America's first black president.

In the US, there was even a vague hope that economic concerns and overseas woes would miraculously vanish overnight. They haven't. Global markets continue to slump and economic news remains grim. Nuclear aspirant North Korea has grown more defiant and the Taliban has strengthened its foothold in Pakistan.

Swine flu: A result of mishandling of animals

THE WORLD Health Organisation has declared swine flu a public health emergency. Michael Greger, MD, Public Health and Animal Agriculture for The Humane Society of the United States, issued the following statement in reaction to the swine flu outbreaks:

“Breeding sows confined in crates so narrow they can’t even turn around produce lower levels of antibodies in response to experimental challenges. Measures as simple as providing straw bedding for pigs improves immune function, presumably by eliminating the immunosuppressive stress of lying on bare concrete for virtually their entire lives. This minimal act—providing straw— has been shown to decrease the risk of swine flu infection, which may play a role in the emergence of human influenza pandemics.

Swine flu: Causes and cure

CLASSICAL SWINE fever (CSF), otherwise known as hog cholera (also sometimes called pig plague based on the German word Schweinepest), is a highly contagious disease that comes from pigs and wild boar. It is caused by Pestivirus, which belongs to the family Flaviviridae.

Swine fever causes fever, skinlesions, convulsions particularly in young animals and fatality within 15 days. The disease is endemic in much of Asia, Central and South America and parts of Europe and Africa. According to the reports of the United Kingdom Husbandry, it was eradicated in animals. This statement was also confirmed by the United States Animal Husbandry in 1978. The major symptom of this virus infection in pigs is the pinpoint hemorrhages on the kidneys.

Shoe-hurling: The new expression of democracy?

MONTHS AGO, Muntadhar-al-Zaidi, an Iraqi journalist, took revenge on ex-American President George Bush in his own way. As Bush was speaking at a press conference, Zaidi rose from his seat abruptly and threw a shoe at the ex-president while shouting in Arabic, “This is a gift from the Iraqis; this is the farewell kiss, you dog!” Bush ducked deftly, and the shoe narrowly missed him. A few seconds later, the journalist tossed his other shoe, again with great force, this time shouting, “This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq!” Again, the shoe sailed over the ex-president’s head. Zaidi was subdued by a fellow journalist and then beaten by members of the ex-president’s security detail, who hauled him out of the room in his white socks. Zaidi was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment by the Iraqi court but the sentence was later reduced to one year.

No vaccine for swine flu!

THERE ARE no hard answers but a consensus is emerging: The disease in Mexico has likely been around longer and infected more people than investigators can confirm.
Swine influenza or flu, is a contagious respiratory disease that affects pigs. It is caused by a virus similar to the type of flu virus that in various forms, infects people every year but is a strain typically found only in pigs -- or in people who have direct contact with pigs. There is no vaccine for the new disease and little natural immunity only.

No Swine Flu case reported in India, checks in place

DESPITE RAISING the warning status of Swine Flu, a notch higher, the World Health Organisation on Thursday (April 30) said that India was fully prepared to meet the situation if there was any outbreak of the pandemic in the country.

WHO also said that no case of Swine Flu has been confirmed in the country. To prevent the outbreak of the dreaded flu, the Government meanwhile has taken quick action and surveillance teams have been set up at all major airports to screen incoming passengers.
