Kick out your back pain before it starts kicking you

WE CAN call it a lifestyle disease. Changing lifestyle and workload are major factors behind the epidemic nature of back pain. The problem is increasing due to lack of preventive management and due to carelessness. Get rid of low back pain before it gets chronic.
Ashish Rana, an employee in a BPO left his job due to prolonged low back pain. The pain had become unbearable for him and quitting his job was the only option left. The situation would have been different had Ashish adopted preventive measures at the right time. The incidence of low back pain is increasing in developing countries owing to ignorance and failure to report for early treatment.
Low back pain is spreading like an epidemic and even rural India has not been left untouched. A study conducted by Department of Orthopaedics, Paraplegia and Rehabilitation, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences tried to find the psychosocial and demographic factors contributing to the high incidence of low back pain.
The study concluded that people in jobs involving heavy manual work were most affected by low back pain. The study showed that low back pain has a lot to do with one’s profession. A sitting job or a job involving heavy manual work may cause low back pain.
Most of us suffer from low back pain at some stage in our life. Our tendency to ignore it plays an important role in the pain becoming chronic. Unfortunately it is only when this happens that we sit up and take notice. Doctors say, “When low back pain persists for more than three months it is said to have become chronic. It generally affects the area between the lower rib cage and the buttock muscles. Low back pain should be treated as a medical disorder and should not be ignored.”
In most of the cases, the reasons behind low back pain are mechanical, which means that it is not associated with any medical condition like cancer or arthritis.

Factors contributing to low back pain:

  • Sedentary life style (sitting work, minimal physical activity etc).
  • Lifting heavy weights or overstretching causes sprain, strain or spasm in muscles or ligaments of the lower back

Quick fact
In India, occurrence of low back pain is alarming; nearly 60 per cent of the people in India have had significant back pain at some time or the other in their lives.
Weight gain during pregnancy, physical stress, inappropriate sitting and standing postures and poor sleeping position also contribute to low back pain.
Know the science behind low back pain.
Dr Harish Bhende, consultant orthopedician, Breach Candy Hospital says, “Spine can be divided into four regions. The lumbar region supports the weight of the upper body and is the region where back pain is felt the most. If the spine becomes overly strained or compressed, a disc may rupture or bulge outward. This rupture may exert pressure on one of the more than 50 nerves connected to the spinal cord that control body movements and conduct signals from the body to the brain. Compression of nerve roots results in back pain.”

Tips to help overcome your back pain

  • Analgesics including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen (commonly known as Brufen) are taken orally to reduce stiffness, swelling and inflammation.
  • Use of cold and hot compresses may help reduce pain and inflammation. Contact a doctor if there is no noticeable reduction in pain and inflammation after 72 hours of self-care.

Quick tips to keep your back healthy:

  • Stretch before you start any exercise or other physical activity.
  • Always make sure your workstation is at a comfortable height for you.
  • Sit in a chair with good back support and proper position and height for the task. Keep your shoulders back and switch sitting positions.
  • Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes.
  • Always sleep on a firm surface.
  • Maintain proper nutrition and diet.

The 'way' to play the game

THE TEAMS participating in the recently concluded Champions League, though not national sides reflect a lot on the way the game is played in their nations. The Australians (read New South Wales) won the inaugural tournament and outplayed Trinidad & Tobago in the crunch game.

South Africa was aptly represented by the Cape Cobras, who despite being very good, ‘choked’ in the semi-final. The county sides from England lacked teeth, more of a reflection on the England’s international performance in the shorter versions of the game. The Indian sides did not capitalize on the home advantage and failed to even make it to the semi-finals.

This article is about the way the game is played, it is not the technique of batting or bowling that matters, it is the temperament, style and the approach towards the game. Let us look at the countries first. South Africa and New Zealand are two teams with exceptional fielding ability, above average individuals and great teamwork. It is said that in South Africa, a young cricketer is first taught the basics of fielding and he then moves on to learn batting or bowling. No wonder some of the best fielders come from the rainbow nation.
New Zealand is a team known to make up for their average lineups or team injuries by intelligent tactics, fielding abilities and simply good game sense. The teams from the Caribbean have their own style of playing - cool, hard-hitting but their unpredictable and hard to read expressions always make them a threat and so they were. The Australians play their cricket in a style of their own but they stick to it. They understand that their best cricket comes out when they sledge and admit it openly; prime examples, Shane Warne encouraging his team to sledge during their recent Ashes defeat or Mitchell Johnson sledging to get back in form. Though, probably not the cleanest way to play a sport but they play tough and have their basics in place. They always play the crucial games and the big moments well having already been tried, tested and well groomed in their domestic arena.

Big matches call for big players and Australians have always risen to the occasion. Shane Watson in the business end of Champions Trophy, Adam Gilchrist in WC 2007 final, Ponting and Co. in 2003 WC final are some examples.

CWG 2010: Common man's wealth games

I STILL remember an article in a leading English newspaper in late 2003, which appreciated the efforts of the government for getting the Commonwealth Games to Delhi, as it had won the bid in Jamaica. Though the state government started the preparation in 2004, but lately I actually forgot the term CWG, and it was only a year back, that the newspapers and online news websites starting buzzing about it.

I wonder where they were from past six years. Everyday I watch the TV news channels smearing the Delhi government whenever they see a open manhole on the footpath, or a waterlogged road. Till now everything seems to be messy, whether it is BRT, Cannaught Place or Greater Kailash, the preparation has hit the people hard, the construction in Delhi means traffic, traffic = loss of time, and that in turn means loss of money. That is why people now try their best to avoid these routes.
The government says that, the objective behind getting the games here was to showcase Delhi as an international city (as termed by the Home Minister) people across the globe should see that how Delhi has developed over the decades (lets say over the months), how the infrastructure has improved (lets say construction has taken place).

And when I discuss this issue with people, I get mixed response, some say that the city is becoming better, on the other hand, some people think that it is just a waste of money. But I am looking at the bigger picture, I believe that such events should take place, on the same time I am against event based development. The important issue is that how these games can create an improved long term infrastructure for the city, as I am very hopeful that after event we will again see vendors on the footpath, the beggars on the streets, water logging during monsoons, water and electricity crisis during summers, and regular traffic jams on the road.

Terror threat over Delhi before opening of Commonwealth Games

TERROR threat by militants from Punjab is looming large over Dellhi prior to the onset of Commonwealth Games, if certain reports are to be believed.  As per a recent advisory submitted by the Punjab police amongst all senior officers in all the states, Pakistan based Sikh militants, who are supported by the ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) may carry out terrorist activities in New Delhi prior to the Commonwealth Games as they are under tremendous pressure from the ISI.

The advisory said, “ Militant leaders, including Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF) chief Ranjit Singh Neeta are planning to undertake some militant actions, including bomb blasts, before the Games scheduled in New Delhi in October”.

In a police raid conducted by Punjab police, Neeta's associates had smuggled around 15 kilograms of RDX into India from Pakistan which were divided into three parts. The RDX was seized from Ferozepur and Rajpura, 40 kilometers away from Chandigarh.

The police further said that the second part of the consignment was supposed to be delivered to a person in Nawanshehr some 80 kilometers away from Chandigarh and third part of the same was to be delivered in Sirsa. The police has also assumed that the third consignment could be meant for the controversial Dera Sacha Sauda Chief, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh who invoked the ire of Sikh militants in 2007 as he projected himself on the lines of the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh.

U.S FDA plans to take off Avastin from shelves

PATIENTS SUFFERING from breast cancer might take it hard, but it has emerged in a new lab trial that the highly awaited Roche drug Avastin does very little in order to help patients suffering from breast cancer. Reports say that the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has plans of taking the drug off the shelfs in the market.

For scores of breast cancer affected patients, Avastin was a highly awaited drug that could enable them to take on their fight against breast cancer although trials which were conducted earlier showed that the drug merely helps in reducing the size of the tumour that grows with breast cancer. Other main reason to conduct this test was to analyze whether does this drug can take an affective stand against the people suffering from it in the longer run or does it just help in reducing the size of the tumour.

The anticipation and thoughts of finally coming across a sustainable solution back fired when the FDA decided to take remove the drug so as to avoid further complications.

HIV-AIDS infection can be curbed with a gel

IT SEEMS that the long wait for a solution to HIV virus has ended finally. According to a latest study, a woman's risk of contracting HIV infection can be significantly reduced with the help of a vaginal gel. The search for such a solution that had been underway for almost 15 years, was discovered by a team of scientists in South Africa, who were working at two levels in Africa that included rural and urban Africa. Their discovery was seen as a sustainable solution for HIV infection and HIV virus as there were other teams involved simultaneously.

Michel Sidibe who is executive director of UNAIDS exulted by saying, “ This is very encouraging. It can be controlled by women, and put in 12 hours earlier, and that is empowering. They do not have to ask the man for permission to use it. And the cost of the gel is not high.’’

As per new medicine, women who applied vaginal microbicidal gel containing an antiretroviral medication which is used to treat the AIDS virus, tenofovir, had 39% less chances of contracting the HIV virus than the women who used placebo. Although furthermore large scale results have to be conducted for understanding the dynamics of this medicine it will take a few more years when this gel hits the market.

A research conducted in the group level showed that the people who used the gel on a regular were likely to reduce the chances of contracting HIV infection by 54 percent on 889 women over a period of two and a half years by Caprissa, an AIDS research center in Durban, South Africa.

HERBAL TEAS are not true teas. It is a combination of fruits and herbs and contains no tea leaves. Herbal tea though plays a part in health don’t offer the same benefits of tea leaves.

Bottled tea is not good as in order to maintain clarity of the tea, processing has removed much of the natural disease preventive antioxidants. For beneficial results, tea steeped in water that has reached boiling point and then iced is a better option.
Teas are differentiated by color, grade and method of processing. Fermented leaves yield black and oolong teas which are heartier. Green tea requires less processing, hence it is green/ gold color and delicate in aroma.
There are over three hundred varieties of tea available and is also the most drank liquid after water. So, have fun and pick your choice.
