BlackBerry given a new deadline: January 2011

NO CONCLUSION in sight as BlackBerry is ‘working towards providing lawful access to Indian government to BlackBerry Messenger Services (BBM)’ and the Indian government has given time till January 2011, for the same.

However, the BlackBerry services will not be disrupted as it could affect the corporates in India. There are about 1.1 million BlackBerry users in India.

There has been this tussle between Research in Motion (RIM), the Canadian company that makes BlackBerry mobile devices and the Indian government to provide access to intercept and monitor the communication made through BlackBerry messenger and enterprise services in readable format.

Initially BlackBerry insisted that it wouldn’t happen; now it says that they are fully cooperating with the government. The government on the other hand, stated that they could monitor voice, SMS and individual email communication but can’t monitor the same through BlackBerry services.

It raises questions of security and the fact that the network could be used by terrorist outfits or other criminals and thus the whole debate started.

RIM said that they don’t have a master key in the system that would allow it or any third party to gain access to encrypted corporate information.

At present, RIM has said that they are ‘fully cooperating with the Indian government’ and the latter has given them time till January 2011, to develop lawful interception facilities with all operators offering the service.
