Proton to sign contract manufacturing deal with HM

THE MALAYSIAN car maker Proton is in talks with Indian’s one of the oldest auto maker Hindustan Motors for assembling cars in the Indian market. Proton is eying to sign a contract manufacturing deal with Hindustan Motors, in which the Malaysian car maker will be using HM’s platform for assembling its portfolio cars in India.

As per the industry sources, the announcement regarding this tie-up is likely to be made by sometime around end of February 2011. If the talks between these companies reach to the fruition, Proton would be using HM’s Chennai plant that was initially established for the assembling of premium sedan Mitsubishi Lancer. It has also been speculated that the new contract manufacturing tie-up could be extended to HM’s ailing plants located in Indore and Uttarpara.

As per the recent media reports, senior officials of the Proton have visited HM’s Chennai plant for a number of times in past few months. The Proton Vehicles that are expected to be launched in the Indian market initially are comprises of Saga, Persona, Exora and Emas hybrid model.

Recently, leading Indian news daily quoted BVR Subbu, director on the Proton board, as saying, "It is true that Proton has been speaking to some Indian manufacturers but I would not like to comment on the matter." The news paper further quotes Hindustan Motors' MD Manoj Jha as saying, "In the automobile business, there are all kinds of discussions with all sorts of companies at all points of time but the discussions with Proton that you are talking about is not taking place."

It has been more than a year since the Malaysian car maker Proton is mulling to enter into a contract manufacturing tie-up with an Indian firm. The company has been in talks with the likes of Mahindra & Mahindra and Hero Group, in previous years.
