15 years back, on this day Sri Lanka became world champion

MARCH 17 is a day to remember for all the Sri Lankan cricket fans. Fifteen years back in 1996 on March 17 world cup history was created, Sri Lanka did the unthinkable in the world of cricket by defeating the Australians in the finals.

Before the commencement of the tournament no one even thought that Sri Lanka could win the trophy, but the army of Arjun Ranatunga did the unpredictable by lifting the world cup.

Their win in the finals of world cup 1996 was not a fluke, the Lankans dominated the world cup without even losing a single game in the tournament. They defeated big names such as England in quarter finals and India in semi-finals.

They took away the game from Australia with ease, Arvinda De Silva was the star performer of the final, scoring 107 runs, and also took 3 wickets and 2 catches in the first inning of the match - winning him the man of the match award.

Arjun Ranatunga made the winning run in the final with 22 balls remaining, leading to a 7-wicket win, and their first world cup championship.
